Minal Khan new Look

Battle of the 'bhoosis'

How creating awareness about aiding weight loss and lowering cholesterol levels has increased the demand for ispaghol. Ispaghol (Psyllium Husk), colloquially known as ‘isabghol ki bhoosi’ in the Subcontinent, has long been the remedy of choice to relieve symptoms associated with indigestion and constipation, and according to the Pakistan Economic Survey (2013-14), sales of ispaghol have been registering an annual growth rate of approximately 10 to 15% in the last six years. These figures apply mostly to unbranded ispaghol, as the branded variety is a relatively new concept Pakistan.

Martial plays down comparisons with Henry

Manchester United's deadline day signing Anthony Martial has played down comparisons with Arsenal's record goalscorer Thierry Henry. Henry had an extremely successful career during his time in England, having won the Premier League twice and the FA Cup thrice with the Gunners. He won the Golden Boot award four times, the most in league history. Henry also leads the all time scoring charts for France with 51 goals and is second in the list of most capped players for his country with 123 caps.

Giggs could have succeeded me as United manager

Alex Ferguson Ryan Giggs would have succeeded Alex Ferguson as Manchester United manager if the winger had stopped playing at the age of 35 instead of continuing until he was 40, the Scotsman has said. Ferguson, who makes the comments in the documentary 'Sir Alex Ferguson: Secrets of Success', to be screened on BBC One on Oct. 31, also defends David Moyes' ill-fated appointment as his successor. “If Ryan Giggs had retired six, seven years ago at, say, 35, quite likely I would have made him my assistant and quite likely he could have moved straight into the job with the experience of being an assistant manager to me as he is doing with Louis van Gaal at the moment,” Ferguson says. “But I would never have asked a player to quit,” he added. The film then cuts to a surprised Giggs, who made 963 appearances for United.

The future of classical music doesn’t look good in Pakistan: Humera Channa

Humera Channa has achieved countless milestones and garnered accolades in the two odd decades she’s been a part of Pakistan’s music industry as a playback singer and recording artist. She has a calm and mild persona. Her down-to-earth personality becomes all the more apparent as I met with her for this interview for Images on Sunday on her recent trip to Karachi while she dealt with the exhaustion of a hectic US concert tour. It is pertinent to mention here that after gaining immense popularity in Pakistan as a vocal artist, she has gone on to become a cultural ambassador for the country.

Taliban fighters launch hit-and-run attacks in Kunduz

KABUL: Taliban fighters on motorbikes have carried out hit-and-run attacks on Afghan forces trying to clear Kunduz city of insurgents, more than a week after the militant movement briefly seized the provincial capital. Adopting new tactics, Taliban fighters have been firing at security forces at checkpoints and then melting away into residential areas, rather than directly engaging in gun battles, said Hamdullah Danishi, acting governor of the northern city.

Ponting, Vettori set to become witnesses in Cairns trial

LONDON: Some of the leading names in world cricket will give evidence in the trial of former New Zealand captain Chris Cairns, who is accused of lying during a libel action. Cairns appeared at a London court Monday before the start of a trial in which he faces charges of perjury and perverting the course of justice in relation to a libel case he brought against Indian Premier League founder Lalit Modi. Cairns won 90,000 pounds (then $140,000) in damages in 2012 after he sued Modi over an accusation of match-fixing. It is alleged that Cairns lied in that libel case when he said he had never cheated, nor contemplated cheating, at cricket. Cairns is also accused of inducing fellow New Zealand cricketer Lou Vincent to provide a false statement. He denies both accusations. Former Australia captain Ricky Ponting as well as past and present New Zealand captains Daniel Vettori and Brendon McCullum are set to be among the witnesses.

The registrar of university, Dr. Moazzam Ali Khan, issued a notification in this regard. Did you know? Most people are okay with downtrodden women on TV: Sakina Samo

There are two kinds of women on Pakistani TV: the wronged woman, who cries, and the bad woman, who thrives on her misery. Many think this polarity of female roles is the result of the lack of women in the director's chair, but what if a female director herself is making dramas that rehash the baechari trope? BBC Urdu quizzed director/actor Sakina Samo on the subject, whose last TV drama was the Lux Style Award-nominated 'Mohabbat Subh Ka Sitara Hai'. The drama told the story of a poor orphan girl, who is sequentially tormented by a money-minded khala/phophi, terrible in-laws and a (mostly) loveless second marriage (her loving first husband of course had to die). "[The baechari trope] is excessive," Samo admits, "but it's only 10-15% of people who think so. Dramas are for the masses, in which women often take a beating." She elaborates on the small changes she's tried to bring in her TV serials – even those, she says, found resistance: "M...

'The Martian' just scratches surface of danger on Mars

Martians are not the villains. Mars is. At least, that's the message in the new big-screen space thriller "The Martian." After an astronaut is stranded alone at a Martian research base, the planet does its best to starve, suffocate, and freeze the puny human. Yet the perils in the movie are just a taste of the challenges that Mars will throw at humans who try to keep themselves alive on the surface. Space experts say the film, which opens nationwide Friday, paints a plausible vision of Mars exploration – "the best space movie since '2001,' " says Robert Braun, NASA's former chief technologist for NASA – but glosses over some of the worst character traits of by the planet next door. Some of the dangers brushed off in the movie could ensure that "The Martian" remains solidly in the camp of science fiction for a long time to come. Among the possible hazards: - Dust. Moon dust made the Apollo astronauts sneeze and gummed up t...
